Fletcher Allen

Fletcher Allen is a university hospital and tertiary-level referral center — serving a population of one million people throughout Vermont and northern New York. We are also a community hospital for 150,000 people in Chittenden and Grand Isle counties. With more than 30 patient care sites and 100 outreach clinics, programs and services throughout the region, Fletcher Allen is committed to being a national model for the delivery of high-quality academic health care for a rural region.

In keeping with this commitment, in the spring of 2008 Fletcher Allen embarked on the first phase of a $57 million, three-year implementation of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, called PRISM (Patient Record and Information Systems Management), which connects virtually every key function in the organization and is a critical element in a statewide inter-operable EHR. Fletcher Allen residents provided essential input to the PRISM electronic health record at all levels, working with project staff to review different aspects of the record and providing valuable input on how the system should work to best meet the needs of providers and patients. Fletcher Allen selected Epic Systems Corporation, of Wisconsin, as the primary vendor to supply specialized software and implementation services for the project. Epic has a wide range of experience in implementing EHR projects at academic medical centers across the country. The EHR project was completed December 2010.

University of Vermont College of Medicine

Throughout its nearly 200-year history, the University of Vermont College of Medicine has developed a longstanding approach to medical education that reinforces the centrality of the doctor-patient relationship. The College was formally founded in 1822, and today graduates nearly 100 physicians and 20 biomedical Ph.D.s each year.

As a fully integrated university hospital, Fletcher Allen includes both a 562-bed licensed hospital and a multi-specialty physician practice group with more than 480 employed faculty physicians. Serving as clinicians and University of Vermont faculty, these physicians are intensely committed to patient care, education and research. Through research-based expertise, clinical and teaching excellence, and strong community partnerships, we deliver the benefits of academic medicine to the region.

Medical Staff

Unlike some academic medical centers, Fletcher Allen includes an "open" medical staff. This means in addition to our 480 UVM Medical Group physicians, there are 230 private practice physicians who also practice at Fletcher Allen. Collectively, this group comprises Fletcher Allen's Medical Staff.
